Fujian Medical University
Fuzhou, Fujian • China
MBBS in English, in the capital of Fujian Province
A provincial medical university with roots going back to 1937
Fujian Medical University (FMU) is based in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province on China's south-eastern coast. According to published histories of the university, it began in 1937 as the Fujian Provincial Medical School, was renamed Fujian Provincial Medical College in 1939 and Fujian Medical College in 1949, and took the name Fujian Medical University in 1969 after merging with the Fujian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the medical department of Huaqiao University. That merger moved it to Quanzhou, and the university returned to Fuzhou in 1978. It is a long and slightly winding history, but it shows an institution that has been training doctors for the province for close to nine decades.
The university has described itself as a key provincial medical university, a centre for teaching, research, treatment and prevention, with around 19 schools and departments in older published figures. Its English-medium MBBS has been presented as one of its featured international programmes, and the university was entitled to recruit international undergraduates well before the recent wave of interest in studying medicine in China. For families, the practical meaning is simple: this is not a newly launched programme learning on the job, but one with a settled approach to teaching students from abroad.
The MBBS for international students is generally published as a six-year programme taught in English. We describe the programme in general terms on this page, because the exact timetable, hospital allocations and internship arrangements are set by the university and can change from one intake to the next; your counsellor will share the current brochure with you.
A note on how to use this page. Every fee below comes from our fee sheet for China, 2026 September intake. Statements about the university's history come from published sources, and we flag where figures are dated. This page cannot guarantee admission or promise a particular exam result. It lays out the structure, the real costs and the process, so that your decision is made with open eyes.
English-medium MBBS
The international MBBS is taught in English, so students can study medicine without first mastering Chinese.
Established since 1937
Almost nine decades of training doctors give the university settled systems for teaching, assessment and clinical placement.
Median-level tuition
At 35,000 RMB, FMU's listed tuition sits exactly at the median across the 44 universities on our 2026 sheet.
Lower hostel charge
The listed hostel fee of 4,000 RMB is lower than at many universities on the same sheet, which helps the overall budget.
Coastal provincial capital
Fuzhou is a large, green coastal city with a mild climate compared with northern China.
Clear, itemised costs
Tuition, hostel and service charges are listed separately, with a short list of extras, so there is little room for surprises.
How a six-year English-medium MBBS in China is organised
The outline below describes the general pattern followed by Chinese medical universities. Fujian Medical University's current brochure sets the exact order of subjects.
The first stage — basic medical sciences
The opening years are devoted to the sciences that every doctor relies on: human anatomy, histology and embryology, physiology, biochemistry, medical cell biology and genetics. Teaching combines lectures with laboratory work, dissection and small-group tutorials. This is the stage in which students build the vocabulary of medicine in English and learn the habits of study that the clinical years will demand.
The second stage — pathology, pharmacology and clinical foundations
Pathology, pathophysiology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology follow, alongside diagnostics and an introduction to clinical skills. Students begin to link what they learned about normal function to how disease presents, and they start to see patients in supervised settings.
The clinical stage — hospital-based learning
Medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics form the core of clinical training, delivered in teaching hospitals. This is the stage where language matters most, because patient interaction in China happens largely in Chinese. Students who invest in their Mandarin early find these years far more rewarding.
The internship year
Chinese MBBS programmes culminate in a rotating clinical internship, usually in the final year. The details, including where it takes place and how it is assessed, are set by the university. We check how the internship is structured against the National Medical Commission's requirements for foreign medical courses before recommending any university.
Who can apply, and what the process looks like
Academic requirements
Chinese universities generally expect applicants to have completed high school with physics, chemistry and biology, usually with strong marks, and a good command of English. Some listings mention English test scores such as IELTS or TOEFL for applicants whose first language is not English, so please ask your counsellor what Fujian Medical University currently requires. Exact minimum marks and age limits can differ between intakes and are set in the university's own admission brochure.
NEET is still required for Indian students
Separate from what any Chinese university asks, Indian students who plan to practise in India after a foreign MBBS must hold a qualifying NEET UG score. This is a rule of India's National Medical Commission, and it applies no matter which country you choose. If you are still deciding between India and abroad, our NEET UG guide explains how the same score keeps both doors open.
The CSCA test — now mandatory
Our 2026 fee sheet carries a prominent reminder that the CSCA test is mandatory. The China Scholastic Competency Assessment is a standardised test organised by the China Scholarship Council for international students planning undergraduate study in China, and official notices make it a requirement for undergraduate applicants from the 2026/27 academic year. Its subjects are Professional Chinese, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Applicants to science and medicine-related majors are generally expected to take Mathematics plus Physics or Chemistry, and programmes taught entirely in English are generally exempt from the Professional Chinese paper. From 2026 the test is offered five times a year, and registration is through the official website, www.csca.cn. Each university sets its own required subjects, so check the admission brochure before registering.

MBBS fee structure at Fujian Medical University
All figures are in Chinese yuan (RMB) and are reproduced from our fee sheet for the 2026 September intake.
| Particulars | Amount (RMB) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee | 35,000 | Teaching, clinical training and examinations for the MBBS major |
| Hostel | 4,000 | University accommodation for international students |
| Management / service charges | 15,000 | Admission processing, documentation, visa guidance and related services |
| Total of listed lines | 54,000 RMB | |
The fee sheet lists these three amounts without stating the billing period for each. In practice, tuition and hostel are usually billed per academic year and a management or service charge is usually paid once, but this is a general pattern, not a statement on the sheet. Please ask your counsellor to confirm the billing schedule and a full six-year projection before you pay anything. Rupee equivalents depend on the exchange rate on the day you pay.
- Application fee 600 RMB approx.
- Insurance fee 800 RMB per year
- Residence permit 400 RMB
- Medical examination 350 RMB approx.
- Books 500 RMB approx.
- Bedding Optional
Indicative first-year outlay
≈ 56,650 RMB
This is our own indicative sum: the three listed lines (54,000 RMB) plus the extras above (2,650 RMB, excluding optional bedding), assuming everything falls due in the first year. It is a planning figure, not an invoice. Actual amounts depend on the billing schedule, exchange rates and the approximate items on the list.
Where FMU sits among 44 universities on our 2026 sheet
Our 2026 fee sheet lists 44 universities in China, with tuition ranging from 21,000 RMB at the lowest to 60,000 RMB at the highest. The median is 35,000 RMB, which is exactly where Fujian Medical University sits. Twenty universities list lower tuition, five (including FMU) are level at this figure, and nineteen list higher. In other words, FMU is the very definition of mid-range on tuition, and its hostel charge of 4,000 RMB is on the lower side, so the all-in picture is a little kinder than the headline tuition alone suggests.
Every university on the sheet carries the same 15,000 RMB management or service charge, which means the real differences between options come down to tuition and hostel. That makes comparison easier: once you set the service charge aside, you are really comparing two numbers per university. It is still worth remembering that the cheapest option is rarely the right one on its own. City, climate, hospital access, the size of the international community and the university's track record matter just as much as a few thousand yuan.
A practical habit that saves families a great deal of confusion is to ask every university or agent for the same four things in writing: the tuition figure and its billing period, the hostel figure and its billing period, exactly what the service charge covers, and the list of extras. When those four answers are on paper, comparing options becomes a simple exercise rather than a guessing game.
For planning, think of the cost in three layers: what you pay the university (tuition and hostel), what covers admission and visa services (the management or service charge), and the small recurring and one-off extras (insurance, residence permit, medical examination, books). Keeping those layers separate makes it much easier to compare FMU with any other university, in China or elsewhere, on equal terms.
Teaching approach and student support
A brief look at how students learn and are supported day to day.
Laboratories & skills training
The early years combine lectures with practical work in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry laboratories, followed by clinical skills training before patient contact.
Teaching hospitals
Clinical years are delivered through hospital-based teaching, ending in a rotating internship as in other Chinese MBBS programmes.
Library & study resources
The university has described a large medical library serving the province, giving students access to textbooks and journals alongside digital resources.
Alfie Education support
We guide documentation, CSCA planning, the visa process and travel, and stay in touch through the early months in China.
"The comparison with other universities on the same sheet helped us see that a mid-range fee with a low hostel charge was exactly the balance we wanted."

Settling into Fuzhou
What day-to-day life looks like for an international student outside the classroom.
Hostel
The listed hostel charge of 4,000 RMB covers university accommodation for international students, giving a supervised base close to campus while you adjust to a new country.
Climate
Fuzhou has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters that rarely turn harshly cold. The coast can see typhoons in late summer and early autumn, so students learn to follow weather alerts.
A green city
Fuzhou is often called the banyan city for its tree-lined streets, and it has a relaxed, livable feel compared with the largest Chinese metropolises.
Food & daily life
Fujian cuisine leans towards seafood, soups and lighter flavours. Indian students commonly form cooking groups and source ingredients from specialist grocers and online delivery.
Language
Teaching is in English, but basic Mandarin makes shopping, transport and clinical rotations far easier. Most students pick up daily-life Chinese within the first year.
Cost of living
Beyond the listed fees, day-to-day costs such as food, local transport and personal items depend heavily on lifestyle. Students who cook in groups and use public transport generally keep monthly spending moderate.
Coming back to practise in India
Recognition is the first question every family should ask about any university abroad. We check a university's current standing against the National Medical Commission's records before recommending it, and we encourage every family to reconfirm this independently before paying any fee, because eligibility lists and rules are reviewed periodically. The NMC also sets conditions on how a foreign medical course must be structured, including its duration, medium of instruction and internship, and we review these against the university's published programme.
After the six-year programme, returning graduates prepare for India's licensing examination — currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is being phased into the National Exit Test (NExT). Passing it is what allows registration with the medical council and the right to practise in India. We guide returning students towards preparation resources, so the transition home is as organised as the departure abroad.
Graduates who wish to specialise can do so within China, in a third country, or by returning to India and competing through NEET PG once they hold valid registration. It helps to keep three ideas separate: recognition (whether the degree is acceptable to regulators), licensing (the exam that permits you to practise) and career planning (the kind of doctor you want to become). Most confusion about whether a foreign degree is valid comes from blending these together.
