About the university

A national key university in northeast China, teaching international MBBS students since 2005

Jilin University (JLU) was founded in 1946 and was listed as a national key university in 1960. It describes itself as a national key comprehensive university directly under China's Ministry of Education, and it is based in Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province in the country's north-east. It is a broad university, offering programmes across many academic categories, and its medical school, the Norman Bethune Health Science Center, is one of its best-known parts. The name honours Norman Bethune, the Canadian thoracic surgeon who devoted himself to setting up medical education in China, and it gives the college a story that is unusual even among Chinese medical schools.

Jilin University began recruiting international undergraduates for clinical medicine taught in English, referred to as MBBS, in 2005. Its own programme page describes nearly twenty years of effort building a training system, including bringing in overseas experts and scholars, setting up an English-teaching faculty, running a distance-learning programme jointly with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and working to bring its curriculum and examinations closer to those of the United States and other developed countries. These are the university's own claims, but they show what it is trying to offer: an English-taught MBBS with an international outlook rather than a translated copy of a Chinese course.

Scale is worth understanding. According to the university's 2025 page, the MBBS currently has around 250 students, with 100 enrolled in 2025, drawn from about 20 countries including Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Kingdom, France and Bangladesh. In April 2023, the College of Basic Medical Sciences formally took over the training of international MBBS students. That is a small, focused cohort compared with some of the larger programmes in China, which may suit students who prefer a close-knit group.

A note on how to use this page. Every fee below comes from our fee sheet for China, 2026 September intake. Statements about the university come from Jilin University's own published material, and we flag where figures are dated. This page cannot guarantee admission or promise a particular exam result. It lays out the structure, the real costs and the process so that your decision is made with open eyes.

Programme structure

How the six-year English-taught MBBS is organised

The outline below follows the courses Jilin University lists for its international MBBS, in the general order used by Chinese medical universities. The current brochure sets the exact timetable.

The basic medical sciences

Jilin University lists courses such as physiology, histology and embryology, human anatomy, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology among the core subjects for international MBBS students. These early years are heavy on laboratory work, dissection and tutorials, and they are where students build the vocabulary and study habits that the clinical years will demand.

Pathology, pharmacology and diagnosis

Pathology, pharmacology and diagnosis follow, linking normal function to how disease presents and is investigated. Students begin supervised contact with patients and learn the basics of history-taking and examination.

Internal medicine, surgery and the clinical years

Internal medicine, surgery and the other clinical subjects are taught in hospital settings. The university says it selects teachers with strong English for international students each semester, and provides experienced tutors to help some international students adapt to the new environment and improve their study. Its older published material also describes three main teaching hospitals and more than thirty cooperative hospitals providing internship resources, although those figures are dated and the current arrangement should be confirmed.

Language in the clinic

Teaching is in English, but patients in Changchun speak Chinese. Students who invest in Mandarin early find the clinical years considerably more rewarding. Jilin University's published admission notes for other programmes give priority to applicants with HSK certificates, which is a reminder that some Chinese knowledge is valued, though it is not a requirement for an English-taught MBBS.

Eligibility & admission

Who can apply, and what the process looks like

Requirements published by the university

Jilin University's general admission page for international undergraduates has asked applicants to be between 18 and 30 years old, in good physical and mental health, and to hold a high-school diploma. It also publishes a separate admission brochure for the MBBS each year, including one for 2026–27, and that brochure is the document that matters for your application. Ask your counsellor for the current version, since age limits, English requirements and documents can differ from one intake to the next.

How the application works

Applicants apply online through the university's International Student Service System. The College of International Education then carries out a preliminary review, and the university notifies applicants of its decision. We prepare and check your documents before submission, so that common problems such as missing translations or attestations do not cost you time.

NEET is still required for Indian students

Separate from what any Chinese university asks, Indian students who plan to practise in India after a foreign MBBS must hold a qualifying NEET UG score. This is a rule of India's National Medical Commission, and it applies no matter which country you choose. If you are still deciding between India and abroad, our NEET UG guide explains how the same score keeps both doors open.

The CSCA test — now mandatory

Our 2026 fee sheet carries a prominent reminder that the CSCA test is mandatory. The China Scholastic Competency Assessment is a standardised test organised by the China Scholarship Council for international students planning undergraduate study in China, and official notices make it a requirement for undergraduate applicants from the 2026/27 academic year. Its subjects are Professional Chinese, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Applicants to medicine-related majors are generally expected to take Mathematics plus Chemistry or Physics, with the exact combination set by each university, and English-taught programmes are generally exempt from the Professional Chinese paper. From 2026 the test is offered five times a year, and registration is through the official website, www.csca.cn. Check Jilin University's MBBS brochure for its required subjects before you register.

The fee sheet lists these three amounts without stating the billing period for each. Please ask your counsellor to confirm the billing schedule and a full six-year projection before you pay anything. Rupee equivalents depend on the exchange rate on the day you pay.

This is our own indicative sum: the three listed lines (57,000 RMB) plus the extras above (2,650 RMB, excluding optional bedding), assuming everything falls due in the first year. It is a planning figure, not an invoice. Actual amounts depend on the billing schedule, exchange rates and the approximate items on the list.

Check the intake before you plan This fee sheet is for the 2026 September intake. If you are planning for a later intake, universities can revise tuition, hostel and service charges, and the CSCA schedule and subject requirements may also change. Always confirm the current figures and dates with your counsellor and, for CSCA, on the official website at www.csca.cn.
Putting the fee in context

Where Jilin University sits among 44 universities on our 2026 sheet

Our 2026 fee sheet lists 44 universities in China, with tuition ranging from 21,000 RMB at the lowest to 60,000 RMB at the highest and a median of 35,000 RMB. Jilin University's 36,000 RMB sits just above the middle: 25 universities list lower tuition, three (including Jilin) are level at this figure, and 16 list higher. Its 6,000 RMB hostel charge is also in the middle of the pack. In practical terms, this is a mid-range option on cost, neither a bargain nor a premium choice.

Every university on the sheet carries the same 15,000 RMB management or service charge, so the real differences come down to tuition and hostel. That makes comparison easier, but it should not be the only factor. City, climate, hospital access, the size of the international community and the university's track record matter just as much as a few thousand yuan. Changchun, for example, has a far colder winter than southern cities, and that is worth weighing honestly.

A practical habit that saves families a great deal of confusion is to ask every university or agent for the same four things in writing: the tuition figure and its billing period, the hostel figure and its billing period, exactly what the service charge covers, and the list of extras. When those four answers are on paper, comparing options becomes a simple exercise rather than a guessing game.

For planning, think of the cost in three layers: what you pay the university (tuition and hostel), what covers admission and visa services (the management or service charge), and the small recurring and one-off extras (insurance, residence permit, medical examination, books). Keeping those layers separate makes it much easier to compare Jilin University with any other university, in China or elsewhere, on equal terms.

Life on campus & in the city

Settling into Changchun

What day-to-day life looks like for an international student outside the classroom.

Hostel

The listed hostel charge of 6,000 RMB covers university accommodation for international students, giving a supervised base close to campus while you adjust to a new country.

Climate

Changchun is in the cold north-east, with long, very cold winters and warm, short summers. Buildings are heated, but students should plan for serious winter clothing from their first autumn. Spring and autumn are brief.

A university city

As a provincial capital with many universities, Changchun has a large student population and a lively campus district. It is also known for China's automotive industry and for its film heritage.

Food & daily life

North-eastern Chinese cooking is hearty, with plenty of wheat, dumplings and stews. Indian students commonly form cooking groups and source ingredients from specialist grocers and online delivery.

Getting around

Changchun has a metro and tram network, an international airport and high-speed rail links to other north-eastern cities and onward to Beijing, which makes holiday travel manageable.

Language

Teaching is in English, but basic Mandarin makes shopping, transport and clinical rotations far easier. Most students pick up daily-life Chinese within the first year.

Recognition & after graduation

Coming back to practise in India

Recognition is the first question every family should ask about any university abroad. We check a university's current standing against the National Medical Commission's records before recommending it, and we encourage every family to reconfirm this independently before paying any fee, because eligibility lists and rules are reviewed periodically. The NMC also sets conditions on how a foreign medical course must be structured, including its duration, medium of instruction and internship, and we review these against the university's published programme.

After the six-year programme, returning graduates prepare for India's licensing examination — currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is being phased into the National Exit Test (NExT). Passing it is what allows registration with the medical council and the right to practise in India. We guide returning students towards preparation resources, so the transition home is as organised as the departure abroad.

Graduates who wish to specialise can do so within China, in a third country, or by returning to India and competing through NEET PG once they hold valid registration. It helps to keep three ideas separate: recognition (whether the degree is acceptable to regulators), licensing (the exam that permits you to practise) and career planning (the kind of doctor you want to become). Most confusion about whether a foreign degree is valid comes from blending these together.
