Jiangsu University
Zhenjiang, Jiangsu β’ China
A key comprehensive university with a 1934 medical heritage
A large comprehensive university on the Yangtze, with a medical school dating to 1934
Jiangsu University (JSU) describes itself as a key comprehensive university, approved by China's Ministry of Education in August 2001 through the merger of three institutions: the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Medical College and Zhenjiang Normal College. Published histories trace the main lineage back to Sanjiang Normal School, founded in 1902, which is why some sources give 1902 as its founding year while others give 2001. Both are accurate in their own way: 1902 is the origin of the lineage, and 2001 is when the present university took shape.
The university sits in Zhenjiang, which it describes as a well-known and historic city on the south bank of the Yangtze River. It is a large institution: its own overview cites more than 45,000 students, including some 14,000 postgraduates and about 2,200 international degree-seekers, more than half of them at graduate level. For an MBBS applicant, the interesting fact is that the medical component is not new. According to the School of Medicine's own history, it traces back to the National Jiangsu Medical College founded in Zhenjiang in 1934, and the part that remained in the city became Zhenjiang Medical College before the 2001 merger.
The School of Medicine says that its Clinical Medicine major has been selected as a National First-Class Specialty and a Brand Specialty of Jiangsu Province, that JSU is one of the 45 medical schools approved by the Ministry of Education for international medical education in China, and that its MBBS programme has been certified with an βExcellentβ rating. Those are the university's own statements, and we cite them as such rather than as independent verification, but they indicate a programme that has been through formal external review.
A note on how to use this page. Every fee below comes from our fee sheet for China, 2026 September intake. Statements about the university come from its published material, and we flag where figures are dated. This page cannot guarantee admission or promise a particular exam result. It lays out the structure, the real costs and the process so that your decision is made with open eyes.
English-medium MBBS
The international MBBS is taught in English over six years, including a one-year internship.
Medical roots from 1934
The School of Medicine traces its history to the National Jiangsu Medical College, founded in Zhenjiang in 1934.
Approved for international medical education
JSU says it is one of 45 medical schools approved by the Ministry of Education to teach international medical students.
Slightly below-median tuition
At 34,000 RMB, the listed tuition is just under the 35,000 RMB median across the 44 universities on our 2026 sheet.
A large international community
With around 2,200 international degree-seekers on campus, newcomers join a community used to students from abroad.
Close to Nanjing
Zhenjiang sits in Jiangsu Province, within easy reach of the provincial capital and the wider Yangtze Delta.
How the six-year English-medium MBBS is organised
The outline below describes the general pattern followed by Chinese medical universities. JSU's current brochure sets the exact order of subjects.
The first stage β basic medical sciences
The opening years concentrate on the sciences every doctor relies on: human anatomy, histology and embryology, physiology, biochemistry, medical cell biology and genetics. Teaching combines lectures with laboratory work, dissection and small-group tutorials. This is also when students settle into a new country and a new teaching style, so a supervised hostel base matters.
The middle stage β pathology, pharmacology and clinical foundations
Pathology, pathophysiology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology follow, together with diagnostics and an introduction to clinical skills. Students connect normal function to the way disease presents and begin supervised contact with patients.
The clinical stage β hospital-based learning
Medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics form the core of clinical training, delivered in teaching hospitals. Because patients in China speak Chinese, this stage rewards students who have invested in their Mandarin early; many find that ward conversations become far more engaging once they can follow them.
The internship year
JSU's published admission notice describes the MBBS as a six-year programme including a one-year internship, which is counted within the six-year total rather than added on. How the internship is structured and assessed matters for recognition in India, so we check it against the National Medical Commission's requirements for foreign medical courses before recommending any university.
Who can apply, and what the process looks like
What the university has published
JSU's international admission notices have asked applicants to apply through the School of International Education's online application system, to attach notarised translations of any document that is not in Chinese or English, and to expect an official admission notice and the JW202 visa application form once the deposit is received. Its notices have also said that applicants who submit SAT, IELTS or TOEFL iBT results are given priority, and that selection is based on overall performance across SAT, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, GCE A-Level and national university entrance exam results.
The notice we found is dated 2018 and mentioned a cap of 100 students, so treat those details as a guide only. Ask your counsellor for the current MBBS brochure, since age limits, English requirements, deposits and deadlines change between intakes. In earlier years JSU also ran an entrance exam for applicants already studying in China; we confirm what, if anything, applies to applicants coming directly from India.
NEET is still required for Indian students
Separate from what any Chinese university asks, Indian students who plan to practise in India after a foreign MBBS must hold a qualifying NEET UG score. This is a rule of India's National Medical Commission, and it applies no matter which country you choose. If you are still deciding between India and abroad, our NEET UG guide explains how the same score keeps both doors open.
The CSCA test β now mandatory
Our 2026 fee sheet carries a prominent reminder that the CSCA test is mandatory. The China Scholastic Competency Assessment is a standardised test organised by the China Scholarship Council for international students planning undergraduate study in China, and official notices make it a requirement for undergraduate applicants from the 2026/27 academic year. Its subjects are Professional Chinese, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Applicants to medicine-related majors are generally expected to take Mathematics plus Chemistry or Physics, with the exact combination set by each university, and English-taught programmes are generally exempt from the Professional Chinese paper. From 2026 the test is offered five times a year, and registration is through the official website, www.csca.cn. Check JSU's current brochure for its required subjects before you register.

MBBS fee structure at Jiangsu University
All figures are in Chinese yuan (RMB) and are reproduced from our fee sheet for the 2026 September intake.
| Particulars | Amount (RMB) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee | 34,000 | Teaching, clinical training and examinations for the MBBS major |
| Hostel | 4,800 | University accommodation for international students |
| Management / service charges | 15,000 | Admission processing, documentation, visa guidance and related services |
| Total of listed lines | 53,800 RMB | |
The fee sheet lists these three amounts without stating the billing period for each. In practice, tuition and hostel are usually billed per academic year and a management or service charge is usually paid once, but this is a general pattern, not a statement on the sheet. Please ask your counsellor to confirm the billing schedule and a full six-year projection before you pay anything. Rupee equivalents depend on the exchange rate on the day you pay.
- Application fee 600 RMB approx.
- Insurance fee 800 RMB per year
- Residence permit 400 RMB
- Medical examination 350 RMB approx.
- Books 500 RMB approx.
- Bedding Optional
Indicative first-year outlay
β 56,450 RMB
This is our own indicative sum: the three listed lines (53,800 RMB) plus the extras above (2,650 RMB, excluding optional bedding), assuming everything falls due in the first year. It is a planning figure, not an invoice. Actual amounts depend on the billing schedule, exchange rates and the approximate items on the list.
Where Jiangsu University sits among 44 universities on our 2026 sheet
Our 2026 fee sheet lists 44 universities in China, with tuition ranging from 21,000 RMB at the lowest to 60,000 RMB at the highest and a median of 35,000 RMB. Jiangsu University's 34,000 RMB sits just below the middle: 17 universities list lower tuition, three (including JSU) are level at this figure, and 24 list higher. Its hostel charge of 4,800 RMB is also on the lower side, which brings the first-year total in below many of its peers.
Nanjing Medical University, which we have covered separately, lists the same 34,000 RMB tuition but a higher hostel charge of 6,000 RMB, so the two Jiangsu options are close on tuition and JSU is cheaper on accommodation. Whether that small gap matters will depend on the rest of the picture: which city suits the student, how large and international the community is, and how each programme is structured.
Every university on the sheet carries the same 15,000 RMB management or service charge, so the real differences come down to tuition and hostel. A practical habit that saves families a great deal of confusion is to ask every university or agent for the same four things in writing: the tuition figure and its billing period, the hostel figure and its billing period, exactly what the service charge covers, and the list of extras. When those four answers are on paper, comparing options becomes a simple exercise.
For planning, think of the cost in three layers: what you pay the university (tuition and hostel), what covers admission and visa services (the management or service charge), and the small recurring and one-off extras (insurance, residence permit, medical examination, books). Keeping those layers separate makes it much easier to compare JSU with any other university, in China or elsewhere, on equal terms.
Teaching approach and student support
A brief look at how students learn and are supported day to day.
A dedicated School of Medicine
The School of Medicine offers five undergraduate specialties alongside master's and doctoral programmes, giving MBBS students a research-active environment in their own field.
Teaching hospitals
Clinical years are delivered through hospital-based teaching, ending in the one-year internship that forms part of the six-year programme.
School of International Education
International students apply and register through the university's School of International Education, which handles admission notices, visa forms and the practical side of studying from abroad.
Alfie Education support
We guide documentation, CSCA planning, the visa process and travel, and stay in touch through the early months in China.
"Comparing it with the other Jiangsu option on the sheet was useful. Same tuition, lower hostel, and our counsellor explained exactly what we would be giving up in city size."

Settling into Zhenjiang
What day-to-day life looks like for an international student outside the classroom.
Hostel
The listed hostel charge of 4,800 RMB covers university accommodation for international students, giving a supervised base close to campus while you adjust to a new country.
Climate
Zhenjiang has hot, humid summers and cold, damp winters, typical of the lower Yangtze region. Heating in older buildings can be limited, so winter clothing and a good heater matter more than many newcomers expect.
A historic Yangtze city
Zhenjiang sits on the south bank of the Yangtze River and is known for its long history and for its local black vinegar. It is a mid-sized, calmer city than the megacities of the east coast.
Food & daily life
The cooking of the Jiangsu region is on the sweeter, lighter side. Indian students commonly form cooking groups and source ingredients from specialist grocers and online delivery.
Getting around
Zhenjiang is well connected by rail to Nanjing, Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta, which makes weekend trips and holiday travel straightforward even though the city itself is smaller.
Language
Teaching is in English, but basic Mandarin makes shopping, transport and clinical rotations far easier. Most students pick up daily-life Chinese within the first year.
Coming back to practise in India
Recognition is the first question every family should ask about any university abroad. We check a university's current standing against the National Medical Commission's records before recommending it, and we encourage every family to reconfirm this independently before paying any fee, because eligibility lists and rules are reviewed periodically. The NMC also sets conditions on how a foreign medical course must be structured, including its duration, medium of instruction and internship, and we review these against the university's published programme.
After the six-year programme, returning graduates prepare for India's licensing examination β currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is being phased into the National Exit Test (NExT). Passing it is what allows registration with the medical council and the right to practise in India. We guide returning students towards preparation resources, so the transition home is as organised as the departure abroad.
Graduates who wish to specialise can do so within China, in a third country, or by returning to India and competing through NEET PG once they hold valid registration. It helps to keep three ideas separate: recognition (whether the degree is acceptable to regulators), licensing (the exam that permits you to practise) and career planning (the kind of doctor you want to become). Most confusion about whether a foreign degree is valid comes from blending these together.
